In partnership with Fayetteville Public Schools, the City of Fayetteville is acquiring Lewis Park from the University of Arkansas. The park will be split with approximately half for the park department and half for the school board.
Why is it important?
In 2018, there was tremendous support from the community for the City to purchase the Lewis Park property. The University of Arkansas Agricultural Department had decided to sell the 27 acres after the 25-year lease with the City expired. This property, primarily used for youth and adult soccer, is strategically located in the center of the City, a highly used green space, and is important to controlling storm water runoff for the surrounding neighborhoods.
What is the current status?
The City of Fayetteville and Fayetteville Public Schools are in the final steps necessary to purchase the land from the University of Arkansas.
When will it be completed?
Acquisition is anticipated to be completed before the end of 2019.
How is it funded?
Funding for the project is provided by the parks bond issue that Fayetteville voters approved in April of 2019. Purchase price with closing costs are anticipated to approximately $1,755,000.
